Year 3 - Ducks and Otters

Autumn 2021

Welcome to Year 3! We are so excited to welcome you to Key Stage 2 and all the wonderful experiences that await. To help everyone have a successful and smooth start to the year, we have laid out key information here.

Curriculum

This half term our topic is World Explorers. This is a Geography-based topic and we will be focusing on the lives and achievements of Christopher Columbus and Amy Johnson.

In Science this half term, we will be focusing on Light. This will include exploring how we can use light safely and how shadows are created and change.

For R.E. we will be learning about Christianity. This includes recognising Christian symbols and key figures and events.

Finally, in PSHE, we will be concentrating on What keeps us safe. We will be discussing ways to keep safe at home, at school and when we are out and about.

P.E.

P.E. takes place for Year 3 on Mondays and Wednesdays. Your child must come to school in correct P.E. kit on these days. Failure to have the correct kit is likely to result in them not being able to participate in the lesson. Please see the school website for more information regarding the P.E. kit requirements. If your child has their ears pierced, they will be required to either take the earrings out, or cover them with tape, for the lesson. Please remember that Cooks Spinney only allows small stud earrings in school.

Homework

As you may be aware, Cooks Spinney has adopted an online homework policy. Your child’s Mathletics and Spelling Shed homework will be set on Fridays. We encourage children to read with an adult at least three times per week to build up their vocabulary and comprehension skills. Children will be given a reading book from our class library. Finally, children are reminded to continue TTRS practise at home as we will be introducing Times Table tests into our weekly timetable.

If you have any questions, or would like to have a chat with any of the Year 3 team, please do not hesitate to be in touch.

Yours faithfully,

Mr McGonagle, Miss Parker and Miss Jackson
