Year 1 - Squirrels and Frogs

Welcome to Year 1!

We are very excited for the year ahead! We hope that the children have great fun this year and make giant leaps in their learning.

Please find some useful information below that should answer some questions you may have.

English

The children will be following Read Write Inc Phonics programme. RWI is a whole-school approach to teaching literacy  that creates fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers. It integrates phonics with comprehension, writing, grammar, spelling and handwriting, using engaging partner work and drama.  The children will be assigned to groups according to their level and we will be assessing the children continuously, so that they can move through the groups as they progress.

The children are already working in groups according to their reading level and we will be assessing the children continuously, so that they can move through the groups as they progress.

Please view the videos below for more information about the Read, Write, Inc programme.

Maths

This term in Maths, we are focusing on Place Value to 10 as well as addition and subtraction. The children will practise ordering numbers, recognising number bonds and finding one more and one less than a number.

We are following a Mastery approach when teaching Maths. This focuses on deepening the children’s understanding of mathematical concepts by using concrete, pictorial and numerical resources.

Science - My Body.

History - My History.

Geography - My World.

P.E

Both Squirrels and Frogs class have their P.E sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Homework

Homework will be set on Wednesday via Mathletics weekly.

We will send home Book Bag Books or Sounds activities matched to the storybooks children read in school and will be used for extra practice at home. They include many of the same reading activities that we use in class and include parent guidance.

Library books will be changed in class on a weekly basis. We encourage that children read every day at home and please record these in their reading records.

Thank you for all your continued support,

The Year 1 Team
