Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

PSHE is taught weekly by class teachers in years 1 - 6.

Why is the teaching of PSHE important for Cooks Spinney's pupils?

PSHE is a unique subject that builds character and resilience, which are the key contributors in overcoming adversity and creating social mobility. It aims to give young people the unstoppable confidence that they can achieve amazing things, teaching them to cope with the challenges that life brings and recognise their achievements – because they each have their own, unique potential to fulfil.

Personal, social, health, economic education – known collectively as the subject, PSHE, is a subject through which students develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. At BMAT, our PSHE curriculum has been devised to promote the wellbeing of all our students (Wellbeing is defined in the Children Act 2004 as the promotion of physical and mental health; emotional wellbeing; social and economic wellbeing; education, training and recreation; recognition of the contribution made by children to society; and protection from harm and neglect).

It follows the DfE guidance for Relationships Education, RSE (relationships and sex education) and Health Education as of June 2019 and January 2020. Evidence has shown that PSHE has a profound impact on academic and non-academic outcomes for students, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. PSHE education provides the foundations for an increasingly varied range of graduate career paths. Students are prepared to undertake undergraduate and master’s degrees in psychotherapy and counselling, medicine, youth work, criminology, social work and social policy, education studies, sociology and healthcare professions (arts therapy, midwifery, nursing, occupational therapy) – this list is not exhaustive.

Please see below for our scheme of work which details what we teach and when we teach it.
